What is considered a masterpiece?
A masterpiece is a work of art that is considered to be of exceptional quality, skill, and significance. It is a creation that is highly esteemed and recognized for its outstanding craftsmanship, artistic expression, or intellectual depth.
A masterpiece often exhibits a high level of mastery in its chosen medium, whether it be painting, sculpture, literature, music, architecture, or any other form of artistic endeavor. It embodies the artist's profound understanding of their craft, their ability to convey powerful emotions or ideas, and their capacity to captivate and inspire viewers, readers, or listeners.
Masterpieces can be found in art museums, galleries, books, and online platforms dedicated to art. Visit local museums, explore online art collections, and immerse yourself in the rich world of art history.
Yet, masterpiece can mean something different to you. Try not to limit yourself to what is universally accepted. If you feel like, you can select your own masterpieces you wish to study. The point is to learn that which you were unfamiliar before and to practice what is yet new to you.
Whatever you chose to study, keep in mind what you want to achieve, but also be ready to get surprised by unexpected feelings and revelations along your study journey.
Why is it important to study the master artists?
When I decided I want to draw Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, it was to study the girl's expression and her unassuming appearance. The characters I usually create in my original paintings are either dreamy, or are gazing into the viewer with a challenge. I also wanted to explore different color combinations to what I would usually choose.
Most importantly, I chose to examine this painting closely and to spend time with it. I wanted to get into the flow of painting with all major decisions already made for me, colors, composition, subject, technique. I could relax and enjoy the painting while respecting master artists' choices. It is a unique experience.
Here is my summary of the major reasons why you should do the master studies:
• Broadening Your Perspective
Studying masterpieces allows you to broaden your artistic perspective. When you delve into the works of master artists, you are exposed to a diverse range of styles, techniques, and themes. Each masterpiece tells a unique story and offers a different way of looking at the world. By immersing yourself in these masterpieces, you can expand your understanding of art and gain new insights into various artistic movements.
I, for one, would not have chosen to paint such a delicate portrait against the dark background, but it surprised me how darker surroundings amplified the girl's gentle appearance. I have learned a subtle but important lesson - always be ready to try out a different perspective so I can challenge the viewers' viewpoint on the portrayed subject.
• Learning different skills from the Masters
The masterpieces created by renowned artists have stood the test of time for a reason. They exemplify exceptional artistic skill, creativity, and vision. By studying these works, you can learn valuable lessons in composition, color theory, brushwork, and more. Observing the techniques employed by the master artists can enhance your own technical abilities and provide a solid foundation for your artistic journey.
Do not forget, you have the complete freedom to choose different artists to study different skills. I have chosen to work on this painting in particular for the applied colors and the success in portraying a delicate persona with a just a gaze, rosy mouth and one pearl earing. Find what is inspiring you and see what else you can find that you love.
• Discovering Different Styles
The master artists have often pioneered new artistic styles or pushed the boundaries of existing ones. By studying their works, you can explore a wide range of artistic styles and find inspiration in the diversity of approaches. Whether you are drawn to the expressive brushstrokes of Van Gogh, the surreal landscapes of Salvador Dali, or the geometric precision of Piet Mondrian, studying masterpieces enables you to discover different styles that resonate with your artistic sensibilities.
Try out as many different styles as you can. I have always loved painting portraits, but from all of my master studies, from landscapes, to architecture, from animals and various portrait styles one thing was made clear to me - I will always love painting women's portraits more than anything. Drawing this girl was an absolute pleasure and I keep getting drawn to depict a woman in every shape and form.
